Field Day!!

Field Day has always been my favorite day of the year. It's the one day where the whole class leaves all the drama and personal problems at home, and instead joins together to accomplish a common goal: Defeating every other class in the grade.
Mrs. Bulloch's first block class had been looking forward to this day for the entire year. We knew we had a good chance of winning, and had already begun to decide which person would do what event. We had a nice combination of strong people and runners to take on the main events - the races and tug of war.

As Field Day began to approach, excitement was building. When the day arrived, we knew we were prepared. Then, the dress code mix up happened. Many of the girls in our class had on shorts that were too short. Yes, they were the longest gym shorts we could find, but they still didn't follow the dress code. There were a few minutes of panic as we waited on parents to bring clothes that followed the dress code to school. In fact, our main girl runner almost missed out on the first event. Fortunately, she arrived just in time.

Thanks to different parents, our class had a tent, chairs, and speakers for us waiting outside. If we ever got tired of standing up throughout the morning, we could retire to the tent where we could sit down, sing along to some country music, and oddly enough, eat shrimp that had been provided.

Our class did fairly well during the morning's outside events. By the end of the morning, we were in second place trailing behind by eleven points. We weren't discouraged, though, because we knew we had a much better chance of winning the indoor events in the afternoon.
One of our classmate's mother was nice enough to bring chick-fil-a for our class. We all had a nice lunch and rested up for the indoor events that would begin soon.
Some of the indoor events were rather odd. Some events required us to eat crackers and attempt to whistle, while others required the participants to blow a ping pong ball across the gym floor on their hands and knees. Nevertheless, my classmates managed to place in a good number of these events.

Soon, it was time for my favorite event, tug of war. My class was pumped and ready to go for this event. We wanted to win very badly. In the words of one of my classmates, "You could lose field day and win tug of war and still be considered winners, because tug of war is the most well known and important event."
Our tug of war strategy was to have the strongest people as anchors in the back. Just a few seconds after deciding on an order, our class was called for our first competition. We were all a little nervous to be going up against this class because they had a good number of stronger people. When the whistle blew, we gave it all we had. Our hands were slipping and burning, and it looked like we were about to lose. But our determination shone through, and we put even more strength into pulling the rope. Slowly but steadily, we began to gain ground. Then the whistle blew again, and we all screamed and jumped up and down because we knew we had won our first round.
The second competition was against an even better class. We were all exhausted from the first competition, and I was still out of breath. Even though we gave it our all again, we were still beaten in the second round of the competition. Of course we were disappointed, but we still knew we might have enough points to win Field Day overall.
We held our breath as the announcer called out the places. Our class won second place, and we were all very excited. Later we found out that the class who won first place only won by one point. Though the other classes didn't know how close we had come to winning, we were still very proud of ourselves because we had given it our all.
